Igor Modic was born in 1949 in Ljubljana. In 1969, he joined the newspaper and graphic company Delo, where he first worked as a lithographer. His great love for photography, which dates back to his primary school days, led him to the photojournalism department. Igor Modic was one of the initiators of the Delo fotoklub or Fotosekcija Delo, which became one of the leading photographic groups in Slovenia and Yugoslavia. He established himself as one of the most successful authors who exhibited his works at home and abroad.

His photographs appeared in numerous exhibitions in Yugoslavia and abroad, including Japan, Spain, Switzerland, the Soviet Union, Austria etc., and he also received more than two hundred prizes and awards for his work. In 1983, the Photographic Association of Yugoslavia awarded Igor Modic the title of Candidate for Master of Photography.

In 2022, Igor Modic joined the ranks of Slovenian photographic legends whose collections are kept by the National Museum of Contemporary History. The museum’s fototeka, which now keeps some 4 million photographs, has thus been enriched by another outstanding photographic opus of historical value. Igor Modic’s fond includes natural history, landscape, sports and mountain photography, as well as reportage, portrait and documentary photography. He took photographs in many different spheres of life at home and abroad, but his photographs in the cultural field are a special feature of the collection.

Ever since he was a child, Igor Modic has admired the beauty of various works of art, and he continues to express this beauty through photography. The theme of the first exhibition, which we are preparing as part of our presentation of the museum’s photographic collections, is therefore the author’s logical choice. These thirty photographs of eminent Slovenians in the field of fine art, captured by Modic while working or socialising, thus reveal only a small part of a rich cultural and artistic photographic series.
