This year marks the 100 years since the death of Srečko Kosovel, one of the most original and prominent voices of Slovenian modern poetry. For this reason, 2026 has been declared Kosovel Year. With the exhibition “Here and There. A Fleeting Departure.”, the National Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia is joining in commemorating the memory of this great poet.

The exhibition takes visitors to places closely connected with Kosovel’s life – to the limestone, the bora wind and the silence of the Karst, to the fog of the city and to Europe’s fractured heart in the wake of the First World War. It is structured around the places that shaped Kosovel. The Karst, Ljubljana and Trieste are not merely geographical locations – they are the inner landscapes of his poetry: spaces of longing, disappointment, rebellion and vision.

Views of places as the poet knew them and his words are placed side by side as equal voices, together creating the tension in which Kosovel’s world unfolds. A world in which nature is both a refuge and a wound, the city a place of searching and loss, and the future a premonition that is both threatening and promising.

The exhibition was made possible by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia.
