Edi Šelhaus – Photographic Moments

Exhibition on view from: January 21 to April 14, 2019
Exhibition Curator: Jožica Šparovec

The exhibition Edi Šelhaus – Photographic Moments is a thematic showcase from the extensive collection of one of Slovenia’s most renowned photojournalists, Edi Šelhaus, preserved by the Museum of Recent History of Slovenia. This edition focuses on the world of film, theater, radio, and television. It serves as an introduction to a comprehensive retrospective of Šelhaus’s photography, which the Museum of Recent History of Slovenia will organize in May 2019 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth.

The exhibition features a selection of photographs taken between 1958 and 1973, with one dating back to 1945. It includes images from the sets of domestic and international films, scenes from the Venice Film Festival, and behind-the-scenes moments from film and theater productions. It also presents a selection from theater performances and events, along with depictions of RTV shows, and radio and television announcers in their studios.

Notable highlights include photographs related to films such as Dance in the Rain, Robin Hood, Pastirci, Ograda, Morning, and Masquerade, as well as the television series VOS II and Blossoms in Autumn. The exhibition also pays tribute to renowned directors, including France Štiglic (who was also born 100 years ago), Boštjan Hladnik, France Kosmač, Andrej Hieng, Veljko Bulajić, and Puriša Djordjević.

Additionally, the exhibition features portraits of prominent theater and film actors, including Stane Sever, Lojze Drenovec, Fran Milčinski-Ježek, Duša Počkaj, Polde Bibič, Marija Lojk, Špela Rozin, Kirk Douglas, Mel Ferrer, Marcello Mastroianni, Franco Nero, and Catherine Spaak. It also showcases moments from the first entertainment television shows, the first Slovenian TV news broadcast in the Slovenian language, and iconic radio and television announcers such as Julka Vahen, Marija Velkavrh, Ana Mlakar, Iva Korošec, Nataša Dolenc, Vili Vodopivec, Marjan Kralj, Sašo Vuga, Jana Osojnik, and others.

The exhibition also commemorates two important anniversaries: the 100th anniversary of the birth of the acclaimed Slovenian director France Štiglic and the 90th anniversary of radio and the 60th anniversary of television, which were celebrated in 2018.
