The Museum of Recent and Contemporary History of Slovenia received an extremely valuable gift. Tomislav Kosančič from Podgrad in Ilirskobistriške, a member of the Police Veteran Association North for Primorska and Notranjska, donated the first Slovenian flag, which was hung from the window on the first floor of the then Militia Department in Podgrad during the independence of Slovenia and the war. The 190 x 95 cm flag has a sewn-on coat of arms. The different shades of blue and red colors of the coat of arms and colored fields prove that the coat of arms and the tricolor were not made of the same fabric. According to the memories of Tomislav Kosančič, the flag was hoisted in Podgrad already on June 26, 1991, the day of the solemn declaration of an independent state and the first public raising of the flag of the Republic of Slovenia. Despite the intention of the Yugoslav People’s Army to remove the flag, it remained and flew in honour of the sovereignty of independent and democratic Slovenia.
