Lipa – the first currency of independent Slovenia

Lipa was the first currency of independent Slovenia, which began to circulate even before independence. It was the first attempt to create a Slovenian currency, initiated by the company Lipa holding d.o.o. under the leadership of Bogdan Oblak – Hamurabi. This initiative came at a time when the Yugoslav economy was collapsing, when economists were predicting an imminent economic collapse. The Lipa project was thus conceived in the early stages of the formation of the new country, but it was the result of a private initiative. Because of this, the currency is less known to the public today. The purpose of the Lipa holding project was to stabilize the currency in a period of high inflation, but soon problems arose in cooperation with the country, which finally decided to independently create the Tolar currency.

The minting of Lipa coins ended in 1991, although they also already minted coins for year 1992, which is why some coins also have this number, even though the tolar was already in force at that time as the official Slovenian currency. The 1992 coins were not mass-produced – they were largely trial strikes intended for inspection by patrons to ensure that the product was produced as expected. Also, in April 1992, a new series of banknotes was printed in a smaller volume, although it was already official that the linden would not function as a national currency.

The coins are part of a wider numismatic collection in the National Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia.
