Anti-government bicycle protests in Slovenia took place regularly in several Slovenian cities from April 24, 2020, until the last Friday before the regular parliamentary elections on April 22, 2022. At the protest rallies, protesters accused the government led by the Slovenian Democratic Party of arbitrariness and protested against several controversial government moves. The implementation of protests during the coronavirus epidemic was made more difficult by decrees aimed at limiting the spread of the epidemic. Cycling was permitted as a type of physical activity, subject to a suitable safety distance. Friday’s cycling protests were organized by a group of movements called the People’s Protest Assembly. Small leaflets were left behind by the protesters at the places where their protest route took place, and museum photographer Sašo Kovačič saved them for the museum’s collection of posters, leaflets, stickers, and banners.
The flyers also accompany Petra Bukovec’s leading protest bicycle, which is displayed in the staircase of the Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia as part of the exhibition Wheels of Destiny: the collection of bicycles of the Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia, which is on display at the Depots of the State Museums in Pivka between May 4 and 15 December 2024.
