Group portrait with Rudolf Maister
General and poet Rudolf Maister (1874-1934) was born on 29th March in 1874
in Kamnik. On this occasion we have chosen a photo on the original glass plate
(Inv. No. 2939/1) kept by the museum photo library. In the photo they sit from
right to left: Commander of the Drava Division Headquarters, General Krsta
Smiljanić, General Rudolf Maister and a priest Matija Randl. It was taken in
Dobrla vas in Carinthia in June 1919. At the end of WWI, after the dissolution
of Austro-Hungary Rudolf Maister took control of the city of Maribor with
a group of officers and soldiers, and was promoted to general by the Styria
National Council. He remained in the collective memory as a commander of the
Slovenian soldiers who fought for the Northern border of the new state SHS.
There is also a letter in the museum collection sent to his »loyal friend and brother
in arms« Vilko Hren, on 12th February 1933. Here, we would like to warn
you about the damage caused by the sticky tape on the letter. You will
find more information on the material and life of Rudolf Maister on the
interinstitutional web project Maister's
Way, that was created under the mentorship of the Intermunicipal Museum of
Kamnik. https://www.rudolfmaister.si/
