Dr. Janez Drnovšek Protocol gift at the signing of the Treaty of
Accession of Republic of Slovenia to the
European Union
On
1 May 2004, the Republic of Slovenia (RS) became a full member of the European
Union (EU). Following a previous, successful referendum on joining the EU, RS
signed the Treaty of Accession to the EU on 16 April 2003 in Athens. The
signing was also attended by the then Slovenian President dr. Janez Drnovšek,
who was the Prime Minister of the RS at the time of the accession negotiations.
On this occasion, the host, the Prime Minister of Greece Constantine Simitis,
presented him with this item of the month.
A
cup on a low pedestal with artfully designed handles on the side (15 x 7 x 10
cm) stands on a square pedestal (8 x 8 x 5 cm) made of plexiglass. On the front,
there is a plaque engraved with the inscription in English "SIGNITURE OF
THE TREATY OF ACCESSION TO THE EUROPEAN UNION ATHENS 16 APRIL 2003.
The
item is part of the collection of protocol gifts of the Presidents of the RS. The
selection will be on display from 1 May 2022 in the open depots of the Museum
of Contemporary History in Pivka.
