Wooden Altar of a Russian Prisoner

A handicraft item of an unknown Russian soldier, which was registered and stored  in 2017,  has been chosen as the museum object of June. It is a 20 x 27.5 cm big object, a carefully handmade portable altar for prayer. By using it the Russian soldier was  able to  preserve his identity, memory of the relatives and connection with his community. Many similar portable altars of this particular style and craft have been preserved. The prisoners manufactured various souvenirs, everyday and decorative objects in their free time. The manufacturing of cigarette cases, jewllery boxes and other objects was widely spread. Despite this fact the preserved items are now rare and each one of them tells us a different story.
