Permanent exhibition
SLOVENIANS IN THE 20th CENTURY
On 20th June, 1996, after several years of scientific preparation,
the permanent exhibition Slovenians in the 20th
Century was opened in the National Museum of Contemporary History. In eight
halls (462.7 m² of exhibition space), we present the most important events,
processes and all forms of life and work on Slovenian territory in an
inseparable unity from the beginning of the First World War onwards. The
exhibition is organized so as to trigger an emotional and rational response
of individual visitors and in other media find additional answers to
questions and issues the museum presents with our own resources.
The twentieth century was one of the most stirring periods of Slovenian
history. Slovenians experienced several states and types of government, we
survived two World Wars, entered the technological revolution and in our
final war, the war for independence, achieved a sovereign state.
This
political and social framework is the basis of the story told by the
multi-room exhibition, regularly updated in recent years.

1918–1941
After the end of the First World War and the dissolution of the
Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, most Slovenians start living in the optimistic State
of Slovenians, Croats and Serbs, later the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and
Slovenians. A large part of Slovenian ethnic space at that time remained in the
hands of
Austria,
Italy and Hungary. |

Second
World War 1941–1945
During the Second World War, the resistance reflected the fact
that Slovenians in general allied themselves with the victorious
anti-Fascist coalition; however, they still had to face elements
of civil war and revolution.

Slovenia
1945–1960
The end of the Second World War was not only a relief from the
four-year nightmare, but also marked the gradual formation of Slovenia within its present borders, in the
newly-created Yugoslavia led by Tito. Because of the many
unresolved internal contradictions, Socialist Yugoslavia
was doomed from the very start.

Slovene Economy since 1945
After 1945, the state took into its hends all economic
mechanisms. A time came for unifying social and economic
life.
Slovenia became a country in which industrial activities quickly
took over a strong majority share in creating a gross domestic
product.
