Paperweight With A Handmade Lace
Ten years ago, Slovenia was coexisting in the European Community for only four year, and has chaired the Council of the European Union from 1 January to 30 June 2008, as the first of the new EU Member States; as the first of the former communist countries; and as the first of the Slavic countries. Slovenia led the main institution for decision-making on the European Union with 27 countries and 490 million inhabitants. It chaired the work of all the Council and EU Councils, represented the EU Council in relation to other EU institutions and represented the EU’s positions in relations with other organizations and countries of the world. With this, Slovenia played an international role, which it has not yet had in its history.
Just before the take-over of the Presidency, the members of the official delegation, at the meeting of the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament and the Slovenian EU Presidency, were endowed with a glass paperweight with a handmade metal lace, made by Andraž Debeljak. According to Dr. Janez Bogataj it carries a symbolic message: “Meetings in Slovenia should strengthen the friendly relations!”
The paperweight is from the museum collection of objects of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU. It was donated to the Museum by the Protocol of the Republic of Slovenia.
