What is more narrative than the symbolic of a heart? The heart is a statement of love and affection. Illustrated, designed, large, little, different shaped, can be made for different reasons in various circumstances – even in the times of war, when the feelings for the loved ones were particularly important. Amid all the evil, they represented what a warm and optimistic idea that held up the tired, the hungry, the neglected and the persecuted. Images of the loved ones kept the prisoners, inmates and deported ones warm in their hearts, at the times when they could enjoy the emotions and contacts only from a distance.

Displayed hearts were made in Ljubljana and Begunje prisons.
